dean

dean
A title in the Christian Church of a dignitary who is in charge of several priests or church divisions, the main administrator in a cathedral. In some universities the dean is a college teacher who has administrative control over a large area of study, and special responsibility for the welfare of the students. Jonathan Swift, after being made dean of St Patrick’s cathedral, recorded in his Journal to Stella, 26 April 1713: ‘I dined with Lord-Treasurer and his Saturday people as usual; and was so bedeaned!’ The Masters, by C.P. Snow has: Then Mrs Jago received us, with an air of grande dame borrowed from Lady Muriel. ‘Do sit down, Dean,’ she said to Chrystal. ‘Do sit down, Tutor,’ she said to Brown. But Mrs Jago’s imitation of Lady Muriel was not exact. Lady Muriel, stiff as she was, would never have called men by their college titles.
